Wight’s Other Sailing Regatta

| September 7th, 2010

The Isle of Wight is becoming more and more popular as a place to go to see and be seen. As well as Cowes Week and The Isle of Wight Festival we now have events like Bestival and the Little Britain Challenge Cup.

If you missed Cowes week this year then the Little Britain Challenge Cup offers you a second bite at the sailing regatta cherry. Set up for the boat building industry the regatta has been going since 1988. Originally there were just three entries, now there are upwards of 250 entries accounting for more than 3,000 individual competitors.

Little Britain Challenge Cup attracts more and more construction companies to join those that have become regulars since the event’s inception. All the available berths in Shepherds Wharf in West Cowes, Venture Quays in East Cowes and Cowes Yacht Haven are booked out Little Britain to accommodate the event’s boats and there is a fabulous social itinerary to coincide with the yachting.

You may not be eligible to enter to sail, the regatta is only open to constructors, their architects and contractors so most of the competition is made up of high level decision makers and industry professionals. However, even if you can’t take part, with teams of this calibre you should be guaranteed to witness some amazing racing. If you decide you still want to be a part of the Little Britain Challenge Cup but don’t want to commit a boat at this stage you can still register for the Social Only entry, as a Social member of proceedings you’ll get the opportunity to see the race from a high speed RIB or from aboard the Cirdan Sailing Trust’s 105 Baltic Trader, Queen Galadriel for a morning, the afternoon or indeed all day.

Once shoreside Little Britain host all the activities and meals at Cowes Yacht Haven with activities planned for every evening. Events which occur beyond the Haven include cocktail parties at the Royal Yacht Squadron, a Friday theme evening and gala dinner on Saturday night. A respected industry social event it’s rather more formal than the other events in the programme.

If you’re not taking part in the event but still want to sail over to the IOW to watch yachting competition at its best wightlink offer sailings from Portsmouth to Fishbourne and Ryde and from Yarmouth to Lymington. Journeys take between around 20 and 40 minutes depending on the route you choose to take.

Tips For Enjoying Air Travel

| September 6th, 2010

Both mistakes and poor planning factor into the distress of some travelers. Traveling via plane and checking into airports can be stressful enough without adding anything else to the mix. With that in mind you should aim to keep everything to do with your air travel as simple as possible.

Following these seven tips will help your next flight to be as pleasant as it is possible for a flight to be.

Know what you want and go for it. Sound like something from a bad self help book but it does actually work and it is something you can do yourself so it’s not all bad news. You should always arrive at the airport with a sense that everything will go smoothly and that the only people you are going to meet today are the ones that will be helpful. The day is more likely to run smoothly if you are thinking that is what is going to happen than if you think that everything is going to go wrong.

The virtues of the slip-on shoe Security in airports is tight, and it doesn’t look to be easing off anytime soon this means that each time we want to fly somewhere we have to do a partial striptease in front of an airport filled with impatient passengers who just want to get on their flight. Wearing slip-on shoes makes the whole taking off your shoes part of airport security a lot easier.

Bring a wheeled carry-on bag. Consider this as a portable airport supply kit. Whether you have luggage to check or not it is still advisable to have a small wheeled carry-on bag with you. If you carry all the little bits you might need during your air travels in a bag over your shoulder then you can find your movements restricted and your shoulders quickly becoming tired. You can use your wheeled carry-on for the food, drinks and magazines that you may pick up during your trip through the airport.

Bring something to eat. Unless you are particularly fond of snacks devoid of nutritional value and high in fat and carbohydrates then you will want to buy healthier food options than what are available on the plane.

Drink plenty of water. Drinking lots of water whilst flying will help you to feel better about the whole experience. Because your plane is sealed and pressurized the air that you breathe in is recycled which makes it very dry. Drinking plenty of water will help your body to deal with the rather nasty crud that you are breathing in.

Silence is golden, so investing in a set of noise-canceling headphones is a good choice. I don’t think that there is anything else I can say but wow! Noise-canceling headphones are a great investment for anyone who want to travel in quiet comfort. I don’t think I have to tell you that planes are not the quietest places on earth. Between the powerful engines, talkative neighbors and the crying children you can quickly find yourself with a thumping headache. These unfortunate side effects of modern air travel can become nothing but a background whisper with the help of noise-canceling headphones.

Bring something to do that can be easily replaced. From crossword puzzles to working of your laptop, there are lots of things you can do to kill times whilst flying or during a layover. But puzzles require a pen, and your laptop will require charging before long and you need a credit card to watch television. I’m sure you understand. Picking entertainment that is easily carried and easily stopped and started again is a great idea as that may happen quite a bit as you progress through your travels. The best option that is available to you is that of a magazine, because it doesn’t matter if you space out and leave it behind because you will have lots of opportunities to replace it.

As well as making sure you stock your survival kit well, implementing these seven tips can help you to make your air travels more enjoyable.

Buying Quality Deck Shoes

| September 6th, 2010

With so much choice available these days, buying deck shoes can be trickier than it looks. Therefore when you start browsing online for deck shoes, take plenty of time to assess all the options, and try and favour practical issues over style especially if you have minimal experience of boating.

The first thing you need to consider when buying reliable deck shoes is how weather conditions can change. It’s all very well buying stylish, lightweight shoes, but you should think about how well they will cope when conditions become a little choppy on board the boat.

Deck Shoes Buying Tips

Therefore, ensure deck shoes offer excellent grip and offer decent durability; after all you don’t want to be in the position of splashing out for another pair within a matter of months.

It’s also worth bearing in mind that some deck shoes, regardless of quality, will leave marks on the deck so try and favour the shoes that will do least damage to your boat.

The next statement may be a little obvious, but do make sure deck shoes are fully waterproof before buying. Don’t forget, every now and then rough conditions are going to make life a little uncomfortable on board, so make sure your deck shoes are the least of your worries.

Of course, many people choose to purchase deck shoes as a fashion statement, and you can find a number of popular and reliable manufacturers selling these boat shoes, including Dubarry, Musto and Henri Lloyd.

Consider whether slip-on or lace-up shoes are the right choice for you. Aside from your preferences stylewise, remember there are some real advantages to both design types. Slip-on shoes are ideal for the active boating enthusiast looking for the minimum of fuss in order to focus on yachting tasks at hand, whilst lace-up shoes are perhaps the more sensible and secure options in terms of safety for when the boat is in motion.

Finally, it’s always best to focus on quality and practicality over fashion and style. Remember, safe and comfortable footwear will only help to enhance your enjoyment of your boat trips, so take plenty of time to mull over and compare as many deck shoes as you can.

Having returned from the U.S just 2 weeks ago in rather unusual terms I think it’s on;y right that I gave praise to the wonderful city of Atlanta. Having arrived at Tampa Airport, Florida tanned, relaxed and about 2 stone heavier after a family break on Anne-Marie island off the West coast of the Floridian peninsula we expected to board our BA flight for the nine hour long-haul flight back to the UK. Imagine our surprise then when an airline representative told us that the flight was overbooked and we’d not be flying home that day! Our disbelief soon turned to elation when we were told that we’d be flying first class to Atlanta and staying overnight there all expenses paid equipped with a generous amount of spending money!

Understandably it didn’t take us long to adjust to the idea that our Florida holidays were going to be extended and within an hour we were boarding an Atlanta-bound Delta flight. The airport was vast and one of the most impressive I’ve ever seen, we received an excellent service, being whisked off into an air conditioned minibus with an extremely polite, intelligent and entertaining driver. Our jubilation continued when we learned of the five star hotel we were being put up in, the lavish reception area gave us a taste of our even-more impressive roooms!

Atlanta is the jewel of the deep south, so we were told, and the city certainly had plenty to offer. Atlanta is perhaps most famous for being the birthplace of Coca-Cola and it certainly isn’t shy about it, documenting the brands history at museum that appeals to both adults and kids. Any lover of sweet, syrupy drinks will be in their element here as the museum allows you to try every iteration of fizzy drink that the coca-cola company has ever produced, just be sure to keep the little ones on a leash! Atlanta has bags of culture and would make a great short break in it’s own right. Atlanta makes a great alternative to New York holidays or California holidays.

Wedding Favor Shot Glasses

| September 6th, 2010

Glass is without doubt one of the least expensive supplies nowadays especially on the subject of buying in bulk. Drink ware made out of glass show to be some of the timeless wedding favors and these days, an increasing number of couples are turning to etched shot glasses as their wedding favors. Favor shot glasses aren’t as expensive as it may sound. Favor shot glasses embody a novel design and a customized message in short sentences from the bride and groom similar to ‘comfortable collectively’, ‘fortunately married’ or ‘thank you’ or it will possibly point out the names of the bride and groom. At instances, the marriage date and venue are additionally included into the glass.

Years ago, marriage ceremony favors used to come back in paper baggage however couples nowadays use etched shot glasses to exchange these baggage since these glasses can turn into useful even after the wedding date. Here is an idea into making your shot glasses look actually nice. Purchase low-cost shot glasses that are not colored nor have designs on it. After getting bought these, get some colored crepe paper of your choice. Crimson, beige, powder blue, pink and even purple and plum colours are great.

Next, minimize the paper into a sq. that is big enough so that its sides spill out of the shot glass. After the sq. of paper is minimize, just place it into the shot glass. It would not should look nice as the entire point of the paper is to be a base. Then, after doing this, embrace candies or trinkets or anything that you simply were planning to incorporate for the wedding favor into the glass. The favor shot glass ought to include a message of ‘Thank You’ as well as the wedding date and venue.

Another attention-grabbing and wonderful wedding favor concept is buying simple shot glasses and filling them with candy. Including a small card that has the names of the couple printed on it gives the marriage favor a personal contact or you may make small cards or tags within the shape that you simply like, glue them onto a toothpick and stick them into the candy-crammed glass together with your private message handwritten or printed. Select candy that does melt or spoil as no person wish to eat spoiled or melted candy. When you can wonderful candy that’s wrapped with individual ornamental paper, it’s even better.

Apart from including sweet or trinkets into your etched shot glass, why not put in scented candles? Scented candles make any present look luxurious and expensive. And besides, your marriage ceremony company can use each the candle and the shot glasses. Personally, I would love presents or favors that can be used. I do not really see the purpose in giving individuals presents that are just meant for decoration–it will only gather dust. However then once more, shopping for presents is an individual’s prerogative.

Favor shot glasses might be bought from on-line and land retailers. Earlier than you go searching for etched glasses, why not take a look at the web websites offering these glasses as it could possibly let you realize the value vary of those glasses and the way much every retailer chargers. Not solely that, on-line procuring affords you extra decisions from all around the world and you will absolutely discover one thing that you just like, or if you do not plan on purchasing it on-line, visit the store or get some attention-grabbing ideas while you visit and offline dealer.

Been Camping Or Rafting?

| September 6th, 2010

There are many different types of vacation out there and choosing the right one to go on is important. If you are always going on the same type of vacation every year, for example one of those spa breaks or dancing holidays then you are actually likely to get very bored indeed in a very short space of time, this is of course if you are going back to the same place every single year.

The one thing that I would always recommend doing is to mix it up a bit, have a bit of an adventure the next time you are planning a trip away. These are some of the options you have when it comes to something different.

Rafting

It does not really matter if you are canoing, kayaking or even rafting, they are all great things to do. If you are booking with all of the right people then you are going to have loads of fun because someone will be there with plenty of experience. They are also of course a great way to have fun together as the whole family and you end up having a right laugh on one of these trips.

Camping

Another great way to spend time together is to go camping as it is something that many people like to do each year and of course others do not. If you have never tried it and are not sure if you are going to like it or not then what I would actually do is rent all of the equipment. this way if you do not like it you know you have not wasted all of the money on buying things.

All in all it doesn’t matter if it is self catering Torquay or a simple trip to a beach for a week, as long as you are having fun it is worth a go!

Recently there were two teenagers who escaped a burning house by jumping on to a trampoline through their window. In Northumberland Street in Higher Broughton a fire broke out on a property at around 3.43am in the morning. On the property there were two teenage girls who were stuck on the third floor. The smoke woke both the girls up.

At these moments you automatically start to panic but the girls were guided by their neighbours to jump on the trampoline which was located in the back garden. They avoided any serious injuries after jumping out of their window. Thought they were still taken to the hospital to do the normal checks. They both suffered minor injuries to their foot, neck and back said the ambulance spokesman and also said they didn’t suffer any serious injuries.

Though fire service spokesperson has asked people not to jump on to the trampoline or take any evasive action like that as it might cause some life threatening injuries. But not sure in that situation what is a person suppose to do, the fire can spread quickly and a person can basically die if they wait their for help and the help doesn’t arrive in time so breaking your legs and wrist in that situation is minor. The girls chose the right way in this situation as no major injuries were suffered.

To be fair the fire service spokesman also said that only take this approach if it’s the last resource you have left and also throw mattresses to break their fall if they can. It is important to minimise heavy fall as much as possible. These days a lot of households have garden trampolines at their property 8ft trampolines to 12ft trampolines, I am not saying you have to jump on the trampoline when fire breaks. I am just saying they be very useful in the future if something like this happens.
