You need to determine what is the main figure in the picture. Are you focusing on something living like a person or animal, or something in the background, like the landscape? Get a mental picture before you take the actual picture.
Next, judge your viewpoint by deciding where to move. You can move to the left or right, zoom your camera in or out, or step back or forward to get the perfect viewpoint. As you assess the best position, the appearance of your picture would change. Avoid anything that may take away from your ability to take the right picture.
If your camera doesn’t have a viewfinder, it’s easy to make one with your hands. Put the tips of your thumbs together, hands flat. Using your thumbs and forefingers, create a square. By holding the square in front of you, you can see your subject much better.
Here are some tips on how to set an effective background. The background, first of all, should not contain any images that distract from the picture’s theme. A good background will not immediately draw attention away from the foreground by being too powerful.
What makes an effective foreground? The foreground should be the lure for the viewer to look at the focal point of the picture. Or it can serve to frame the picture as long as it adds interest and doesn’t become too overpowering.
When taking long shots, don’t let the sky dominate. Look for ways to introduce perspective in the foreground. Classic examples of objects with strong perspective would be roads, paths, or anything else with powerful lines.
If you wish to add to the background of your picture, a long shot would be ideal for this situation. Watch out, though, because you may not be able to recognize the picture’s human subject. If the subject is human, it would be better to move a bit closer. Closeups can get yield some great facial expressions, especially if the shot is unplanned.
